The First Tee Life Skills Experience
The First Tee uses golf to teach kids life lessons and leadership skills with an innovative curriculum–Life Skills Experience (LSE)–developed by leading youth educators and coaches. LSE is a tiered program with five levels. Kids can begin as early as age 7, then advance at their own pace as they meet minimum ages and demonstrate proficiency in both their golf and character skills. Upon graduating from high school, young people can remain active by joining The First Tee Alumni Network.
At The First Tee-GCNKY, we offer multi-week LSE sessions in spring, summer and fall at a variety of area golf course teaching locations. We welcome all kids regardless of background or means. No previous golf experience is needed and we provide all equipment. Our chapter serves Hamilton, Clermont, Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties.
A Youth Program Unlike Any Other
LSE seamlessly integrates important Life Skills (interpersonal communications, goal-setting, self-management and resiliency), Nine Core Values (honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment) and Nine Healthy Habits (energy, play, safety, vision, mind, family, friends, school, and community.
LSE Program Levels
Kids must be at least 7 years old to participate, and all must start at the PLAYer level, regardless of age or golf experience.
- PLAYer: Tee up for the first time and learn the game of golf and The First Tee’s Code of Conduct.
- Par: Focus on interpersonal and self-management skills on and off the course.
- Birdie: Emphasis on setting goals and making them a reality.
- Eagle; Learn resilience, conflict resolution, and future planning.
- Ace: Put it all together and hone in on setting goals, career education, and giving back to the community.
At The First Tee-GCNKY we charge a modest per-session registration fee, but also offer scholarships on request.
The Power of Relationships
At The First Tee, we know success hinges on our Coaches and we’ve proved the best outcomes for kids happen when they can form meaningful, quality relationships with positive adult role models. All our classes are led by a Head Coach who is assisted by a team of volunteers, and typically also a golf professional best suited to teach swing mechanics. All of them are trained to understand The First Tee coaching philosophy and the building blocks of our unique curriculum. To the kids, each of them is “COACH.”
The First Tee gave (my daughter) confidence and helped her learn how to set goals and dream big. She met great kids and coaches. She always says it feels like home to her.” — TFT-GCNKY Parent, Dec 2016
